Dorian Mode

Created by Bill Johnston, Modified on Sat, 30 May at 11:48 PM by Bill Johnston

The Dorian mode on the guitar is a cool, soulful scale with a distinct minor sound that is widely used in jazz, blues, and classic rock. It is the second mode of the major scale, constructed by flattening the third and seventh notes of a standard major scale (1, 2, b3, 4, 5, 6, b7). Guitarists love the Dorian mode because its major sixth interval gives it a brighter, sweeter quality compared to the sadder natural minor scale. It fits perfectly over minor seventh chords, making it the secret weapon behind legendary Carlos Santana solos and classic funk grooves.
